About GEM

The Blogher

I’m a 30-plus year old neuroscientist-turned-policy analyst living in the DC area, living as the best me I’ve ever been! I’m almost never at a loss for words and eager to share my thoughts with anyone willing to listen/read. I enjoy sharing my musings through written word. That’s What GEM Said is my virtual journal for public consumption. Here, you can watch me as I grow.

The Name
“Gem of the Ocean” originally comes from the title of my favorite playwright August Wilson’s first play in his Pittsburgh Cycle, a series of ten plays chronicling the African American experience throughout the twentieth century. “Gem of the Ocean” is one of the most powerful, spiritually-charged plays I’ve ever seen. Aside from the play, when I hear “gem of the ocean I think of a pearl–my favorite jewel, the jewel of my sorority, and my birth name’s meaning. Pearls are feminine, rare, and valuable… and so am I.
